How to Start a WordPress Blog (2026): A 10-Step Beginner Guide

Updated October 2026

Starting a WordPress Blog: What You'll Need

A self-hosted WordPress blog needs three things: a domain name (your address, like yourblog.com), web hosting (where the site lives) and WordPress itself (free software most hosts install for you). You can have all three running in under an hour. This guide walks through each step in order, from choosing a host to publishing your first post.

Step 1: Choose Your Blog's Topic and Name

Pick a topic you can write about consistently for a long time. Good blog topics sit where your knowledge, your interest and reader demand overlap. Then choose a name that is short, easy to spell and related to your topic, and check that the matching .com domain is available.

  • Keep it under about 15 characters if you can.
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers, which are easy to mistype.
  • Avoid trademarks of brands you do not own.
  • Make it broad enough to grow; "Home Coffee Lab" outlasts "Best Aeropress Recipes".

Step 2: Choose a Web Host

Your host affects how fast your blog loads, how secure it is and how much maintenance you do. For a new blog, these are the three options we recommend, depending on your goals:

Your SituationOur PickWhyStarting Price
First blog, lowest costBluehostFree first-year domain, AI builder, guided setup$3.99/mo intro (36 months)
Serious blog you plan to monetizeWPXDaily backups, malware removal, built-in CDN, expert help$17.99/mo (monthly list)
Several blogs on one planScalaHostingUnlimited sites and free domain from Start$5.95/mo intro (Start)

If your blog is a side project you want to test cheaply, Bluehost is the easiest start: one checkout covers hosting, a free domain for the first year and SSL. If you are building a blog as a business, with ads, affiliate income or products, WPX takes the technical risk off your plate from day one. Step 3: Buy Hosting and Register Your Domain

  1. Pick your plan. For a single new blog, an entry plan is enough. If you might start a second site, choose a multi-site plan from the start.
  2. Register or connect your domain. With Bluehost or ScalaHosting's Start plan and above, the domain can be included. With WPX, register your domain separately (any registrar works) and point it to WPX.
  3. Choose your billing term. Longer terms lower the monthly price. Note the renewal price before you pay.
  4. Skip add-ons you don't need. SSL, backups and basic security are included with our recommended hosts.

Step 4: Install WordPress

All three hosts install WordPress for you or with one click. Bluehost can also generate starter designs with its AI builder. After installation you will receive your WordPress login, usually at yourblog.com/wp-admin. Before doing anything else, confirm that your site loads over https:// with a padlock, which means the free SSL certificate is active.

Step 5: Configure the Essential Settings

  • Site title and tagline: Settings → General.
  • Permalinks: Settings → Permalinks, choose "Post name" for clean URLs like /my-first-post/.
  • Time zone and language: Settings → General.
  • Discussion: Decide whether to allow comments, and enable moderation if you do.
  • Delete sample content: Remove the default post, page and comment.

Step 6: Choose a Theme

Your theme controls design and layout. For a new blog, choose a lightweight, well-maintained theme with good reviews and recent updates. Many popular free themes, such as Astra, Kadence, GeneratePress and WordPress's own default block themes, are fast and flexible. Prioritize readability: a clean layout, comfortable font size and good mobile display matter more than flashy effects.

Step 7: Install Only the Plugins You Need

Plugins add features, but every extra plugin is more code to update and secure. A lean starter set covers most blogs:

NeedPlugin TypeNote
SEOSEO plugin (e.g., Yoast SEO, Rank Math)Yoast comes pre-installed on Bluehost
SpeedCaching pluginUse the one your host recommends
SpamAnti-spam pluginOnly if comments are enabled
FormsContact form pluginFor your contact page
BackupsOptional backup pluginWPX and Scala already include automatic backups

Step 8: Create Your Core Pages

  • About: who you are, what the blog covers and why readers should trust it.
  • Contact: a simple form or email address.
  • Privacy Policy: required in many places once you collect data or use analytics.
  • Disclosure: needed if you use affiliate links or sponsored content.

Then add your main categories to the navigation menu under Appearance → Menus (or the Site Editor in block themes).

Step 9: Write and Publish Your First Posts

Plan your first five to ten posts before you publish, so new visitors find more than one article. Focus on specific questions your audience searches for, answer them clearly, and link related posts to each other. Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs and images with alt text. Consistency beats volume: one useful post a week, published reliably, builds an audience faster than bursts of activity.

Step 10: Get Found and Keep the Blog Healthy

  • Google Search Console: verify your site and submit your sitemap so Google can find your posts.
  • Analytics: add a privacy-friendly analytics tool to see what readers like.
  • Updates: keep WordPress, your theme and plugins updated (Bluehost and Scala can automate this).
  • Backups: confirm automatic backups are running, and know how to restore one.
  • Speed: compress images and enable your host's CDN.

Plan Your Blog's Structure

Before publishing much, decide on three to six main categories that cover your topic. Each category should be broad enough for many posts but distinct from the others. A clear structure helps readers find related articles and helps search engines understand what your blog covers. Link new posts to related older ones, and keep a simple list of planned articles under each category so you always know what to write next.

A Simple Checklist for Every Post

  • A clear title that matches what readers search for
  • An introduction that answers the main question quickly
  • Descriptive subheadings and short paragraphs
  • At least one image with descriptive alt text
  • Links to two or three related posts on your blog
  • A short meta description written for searchers
  • A final read-through on mobile before publishing

Ways Blogs Make Money

If you plan to earn from your blog, choose a model early, because it shapes what you write:

ModelHow It WorksBest For
Display adsEarn from ad impressions on your pagesHigh-traffic informational blogs
Affiliate marketingEarn commission when readers buy products you recommendReviews, comparisons and how-to content
Digital productsSell guides, templates or coursesBlogs with a loyal, engaged audience
ServicesUse the blog to win clientsConsultants, freelancers, agencies

Once a blog earns money, uptime, speed and security matter more, which is when upgrading to managed hosting such as WPX usually pays for itself.
